Real Estate: Florida again king of foreclosures

REAL ESTATE – Florida will again become the nation’s best state to buy a foreclosure this year, even as overall housing inventories flirt with decade lows and prices escalate to post-bubble heights, a new report predicts.

Sarasota: Tightrope walker, Nik Wallenda to walk 200 feet over U.S. 41

Sarasota: Lockheed Martin to close plant and cut 57 jobs

Lockheed Martin to close plant in Manatee County, FL
MANATEE COUNTY – Lockheed Martin Corp. plans to close its Gyrocam Systems plant in southern Manatee County later this winter, eliminating 57 local jobs.

The giant defense contractor notified state employment officials last week that it was permanently shutting down the plant on March 15.

A company spokeswoman said Friday that 22 of the employees will transfer to plants in Orlando or Ocala, where the Gyrocam work is being absorbed. (Read More)

Sweetbay closing 5 stores in South West FloridaSweetbay Supermarket intends to shutter a handful of area supermarkets in the next month — and nearly one-third statewide — as part of a corporate restructuring.

The local stores are at 501 N. Beneva Road, in Sarasota; 5201 33rd St. E., in Bradenton; 8750 State Road 70 E., in Manatee County; 3410 U.S. 301, in Ellenton; and 10175 Tamiami Trail, in Punta Gorda.

The local closings will cost 250 to 300 jobs, the company said Thursday. Read More

Sarasota red tide fish killUPDATE: Countless dead fish washed ashore Thursday morning on Southwest Florida shorelines, including Siesta Public Beach, as a red tide bloom moved northward, causing respiratory problems for beach goers and an eyesore for tourists vital to the region’s economy.

The greatest concentrations of red tide were reported along Siesta Key, from Turtle Beach at Midnight Pass Road south to Blind Pass Beach. Fish kills and respiratory difficulties have also been reported on Holmes Beach and as far north as the tip of Anna Maria Island. Read More.
