Final ex-Lee County manager Hawes’ payout reaches $264,000

karen hawes payoutRecently obtained financial records detail $264,000 commissioners agreed to pay their former top staffer for resigning amid the Medstar controversy.

The deal commissioners struck in the waning moments of former County Manager Karen Hawes’ tenure cost Lee County about $36,500 more than her employment contract provided.

Linked to a drug arrest in early November, Brian Bigelow maintained his innocence and denied he had fallen off the wagon after 22 years of sobriety.

But the former Lee County commissioner’s legal troubles and questions about possible substance abuse continued to mount early Friday when Fort Myers police arrested Bigelow, 49, after they reported finding 11 small bags of cocaine on him. Read More
