Cape Coral: Tour de Cape participant dies after collision with another bicyclist

A bicyclist was killed today from injuries suffered in the Tour De Cape event in Cape Coral.

According to Cape Coral Police, two bicyclists taking part in the event were traveling east on Beach Parkway West in the 2800 block at 10:04 a.m. The front tire of one bicycle ridden by James Heneghan, 69, of Cape Coral, struck the rear tire of the other bicycle, causing Heneghan to lose control of his bike. Long arm of the law usually belongs to a white male in Southwest Florida

Police offcers in Southwest Florida Southwest Florida law enforcement agencies serve an increasingly diverse population, but their 2,142 sworn employees don’t reflect it.

The News-Press analyzed statistics from four agencies: Fort Myers Police Department, Cape Coral Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Collier County Sheriff’s Office, to see how their personnel measures up in race and gender against the populations they serve.

They’re overwhelmingly white, ranging from 72 to 88 percent, the numbers show. They’re overwhelmingly male, ranging from 80 to 90 percent. The Southwest Florida populations they serve also are largely white, but in two cases — Fort Myers police and Collier County sheriff — the number of white officers is 18 percent higher than the population served. Linked to a drug arrest in early November, Brian Bigelow maintained his innocence and denied he had fallen off the wagon after 22 years of sobriety.

But the former Lee County commissioner’s legal troubles and questions about possible substance abuse continued to mount early Friday when Fort Myers police arrested Bigelow, 49, after they reported finding 11 small bags of cocaine on him. Read More

HERALD TRIBUNE: Sweetbay to close 5 stores in region

Sweetbay closing 5 stores in South West FloridaSweetbay Supermarket intends to shutter a handful of area supermarkets in the next month — and nearly one-third statewide — as part of a corporate restructuring.

The local stores are at 501 N. Beneva Road, in Sarasota; 5201 33rd St. E., in Bradenton; 8750 State Road 70 E., in Manatee County; 3410 U.S. 301, in Ellenton; and 10175 Tamiami Trail, in Punta Gorda.

The local closings will cost 250 to 300 jobs, the company said Thursday. Read More
