Cape Coral: Whooping cough confirmed at Hector Cafferata Elementary School

CAPE CORAL, FL – After speaking with parents, we have learned the Lee County student with whooping cough goes to Hector Cafferata Elementary School on Santa Barbara Boulevard north in Cape Coral.

Postal Service To Fill Local Jobs

Lee, Collier & Charlotte Counties – The U.S. Postal Service is looking to fill positions. These positions are temporary but could lead to permanent employment.

The position of City Carrier Assistant is a new category of non-career employees. City Carrier Assistants are used to carry mail for routes where the regular carrier is not available.

City Carrier Assistants perform the same duties as regular letter carriers with a few differences. They do not receive full benefits or a pension and there is no set route or guarantee of 40 hours per work week. Salary and benefits include $15 an hour and paid vacation days and eligibility for health care benefits as required by law, or after the first 360-day term.

For years, the U.S. Postal Service has used transitional employees to fill carrier needs. Some transitional employees have been with the postal service for years.

Applicants must be 18 years or older. Applicants must have a valid state driver’s

license, a safe driving record, and at least two years of documented driving experience. Qualified applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening to meet the U.S. Postal Service’s requirement to be drug free. Applicants must also be a U.S.citizen or have permanent resident alien status.

Cape Coral: Tour de Cape participant dies after collision with another bicyclist

A bicyclist was killed today from injuries suffered in the Tour De Cape event in Cape Coral.

According to Cape Coral Police, two bicyclists taking part in the event were traveling east on Beach Parkway West in the 2800 block at 10:04 a.m. The front tire of one bicycle ridden by James Heneghan, 69, of Cape Coral, struck the rear tire of the other bicycle, causing Heneghan to lose control of his bike. Long arm of the law usually belongs to a white male in Southwest Florida

Police offcers in Southwest Florida Southwest Florida law enforcement agencies serve an increasingly diverse population, but their 2,142 sworn employees don’t reflect it.

The News-Press analyzed statistics from four agencies: Fort Myers Police Department, Cape Coral Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Collier County Sheriff’s Office, to see how their personnel measures up in race and gender against the populations they serve.

They’re overwhelmingly white, ranging from 72 to 88 percent, the numbers show. They’re overwhelmingly male, ranging from 80 to 90 percent. The Southwest Florida populations they serve also are largely white, but in two cases — Fort Myers police and Collier County sheriff — the number of white officers is 18 percent higher than the population served.
